As of summer 2012, it was missing Apple's own Thunderbolt ports, not to mention 802.11n WiFi. Well, minus my USB NIC mysteriously dropping off its vSwitch, but I'm not sure the two are related.Īnyway, I can't recall seeing any posts around trashcan CPU swaps before so thought I'd share some pics.It would be an understatement to say that Apple's Mac Pro workstation was getting a little long in the tooth. I took some canned air to the nooks and crannies before putting everything together, and was happy to see it come online without issue.

I was thinking I'd have to create some kind of makeshift screws with my Dremel before my pliers luckily slipped off and pulled the 'stop' sticker off the top of one of the screws! After that nuisance I was able to get the CPUs swapped and the trashcan back together in no time. I gave it a try and was not having any luck getting them to grip at all. In addition, I had a mini panic attack when I noticed the final four CPU bracket screws had no holes in them for the T10 bit that was supposed to be on them! Some quick Googling returned a forum thread where somebody said they had to use needle nose pliers to get them out. Honestly the toughest part was getting the tiny Airport antenna cable plugged back in! Based on the OWC video I was concerned it would be difficult, but it was much easier than expected. So I snagged a 10-core off Ebay and did the swap today. I had been eying up a used 10-core 3.0 GHz Xeon E5-2690v2 on OWC Mac Sales for a while, but in looking on Ebay found the same used CPU could be had for a third the price.

Since then I've replaced the OS with VMware ESXi 6.7 and virtualized the Plex server among other things, but always wanted to upgrade the CPU to something with more cores. A few years ago I replaced my mid-2011 dual core i5 2.5 GHz Mac mini with a 2013 Mac Pro with a 4-core 3.7 GHz Xeon E5-1620v2 to be used primarily as my Plex server.
